Midwest’s Top Choice for Land Clearing, Tree Care & Mulch

Types of Mulch: Which Type of Mulch is Best for Your Landscape?

Mulch is one of the most important components of a healthy, low-maintenance landscape. It helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve the appearance of your outdoor space. But not all mulch is created equal—so how do you choose the best mulch for landscaping?

In this guide, we’ll break down the different types of mulch, explore the pros and cons of organic vs. inorganic mulch, and compare shredded mulch vs. wood chips and rubber mulch vs. natural mulch to help you find the best fit for your property.

Organic vs. Inorganic Mulch

Organic mulch is made from natural materials such as bark, wood chips, leaves, and compost. These mulches break down over time, enriching the soil with nutrients and supporting plant health.

Inorganic mulch, on the other hand, is made from materials like rubber, rock, or landscape fabric. While it doesn’t break down or improve soil fertility, inorganic mulch is long-lasting and great for low-maintenance areas.

Organic Mulch

Benefits Comparison:

  • Organic mulch improves soil structure and fertility as it decomposes but needs to be replenished periodically.
  • Inorganic mulch doesn’t decompose, making it a long-term solution in some settings, but it provides no nutritional benefit to the soil.

Shredded Mulch vs. Wood Chips

At Homer Industries, we offer high-quality shredded mulch products made from recycled hardwood logs and limbs. Our natural mulch options include double-ground hardwood mulch and premium bark mulch, ideal for both residential and commercial landscapes.

Whole Tree Chips

Here’s how shredded mulch compares to wood chips:

Shredded Mulch:

  • Interlocks well, making it less likely to wash away during storms
  • Decomposes slowly, providing steady enrichment to the soil
  • Ideal for slopes, planting beds, and tree rings

Wood Chips:

  • Tend to be chunkier and more loosely packed
  • Break down more quickly than shredded mulch
  • Better for pathways or casual garden areas

If you’re deciding between shredded mulch vs. wood chips, consider your landscape’s needs and how often you want to replenish mulch throughout the year.

Rubber Mulch vs. Natural Mulch

Rubber mulch—an increasingly popular inorganic mulch—is made from recycled tires and often used in playgrounds or around high-traffic areas. It doesn’t decompose, meaning less maintenance, but it also doesn’t offer the ecological benefits of natural mulch.

Rubber Mulch:

  • Long-lasting and won’t attract pests
  • Doesn’t decompose, which means it won’t nourish the soil
  • Can heat up quickly in summer, potentially harming nearby plants

Natural Mulch (like the mulch we produce at Homer Industries):

  • Breaks down gradually, improving soil health
  • Provides a more natural look that enhances plant beds
  • Cooler surface temperatures support root health

While rubber mulch vs. natural mulch might come down to aesthetics and functionality, most landscaping professionals recommend natural mulch for plant health and sustainability.

So, What’s the Best Mulch for Landscaping?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The best mulch for landscaping depends on your goals:

  • For long-term soil health: go with organic mulch like shredded hardwood or bark mulch
  • For high-traffic or ornamental areas: consider inorganic mulch for durability
  • For eco-friendly and natural appeal: choose a natural mulch like the premium hardwood mulch from Homer Industries

Homer Tree came out and took down ten- 100+ ft tall Red Oaks lost to Oak Wilt and then took all the stumps out. They were very professional and skilled. Despite our greenhouse under the trees they did zero damage to anything with all of their large trucks and high work dropping massive logs. The price was amazing and they beat 4 other companies and even solo jobbers by thousands. I recommend them highly.

We had considerable storm damage from the June 6th storm. We lost 4 trees plus damage to many others. Not only did Homer Companies give us a great price to remove all the damaged trees and grind the stumps, the work was performed quickly and thoroughly. The Homer "team" was very easy to work with and went beyond expectations to address all of our concerns.
