Midwest’s Top Choice for Land Clearing, Tree Care & Mulch

Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal

Tree and Stump Removal team

When a tree comes down in your yard, the job isn’t always finished once the trunk and branches are cleared away. What’s left behind—the stump—can create more problems than many homeowners realize. Whether it’s a tripping hazard, a magnet for pests, or simply an eyesore in your landscape, you’ll likely want to deal with it sooner rather than later. But the big question is: should you choose stump grinding or stump removal?

At Homer Tree Care, our certified arborists often help homeowners weigh their tree stump removal options based on their property’s needs, budget, and long-term goals. Here’s a breakdown of the differences, benefits, and considerations of each method.

What Is Stump Grinding?

A stump grinding service uses specialized machinery to grind the tree stump down into small wood chips. The grinder chews away at the stump until it’s ground below the soil line, typically 6–12 inches deep. The remaining wood chips can be used as mulch or removed from the site.

Stump Grinding Benefits:

  • Faster process– Stump grinding usually takes just a few hours.
  • Less invasive – Heavy digging isn’t required, so your yard experiences minimal disturbance.
  • Affordable option – Compared to full removal, the cost to remove a tree stump by grinding is generally lower.
  • Reclaimed space – Once ground down, the area can be leveled and replanted with grass, flowers, or shrubs.

However, the roots remain underground. While they’ll eventually decay naturally, they can sometimes produce new shoots or interfere with future construction.

What Is Stump Removal?

Full tree stump removal involves extracting the entire stump along with its root system. This is done by digging the stump out with heavy equipment or hand tools, depending on its size and location.

Pros of Stump Removal:

  • Complete removal – Roots and all, nothing remains underground.
  • No regrowth – Unlike grinding, sprouts won’t return from leftover roots.
  • Better for construction – If you plan to build, pave, or landscape heavily, removal clears the ground completely.

Cons of Stump Removal:

  • More invasive – The process can leave a large hole and disturb surrounding soil.
  • Higher cost – Because of the labor and equipment required, the cost to remove a stump entirely is often higher.
  • Time-consuming – Depending on the stump’s size and root system, removal may take longer than grinding.

Stump Grinding vs. Digging: Which Is Right for You?

When deciding between stump grinding vs digging (removal), it comes down to your priorities:

  • Choose stump grinding if… you want a quicker, less invasive, and more budget-friendly solution, and you don’t mind roots remaining underground.
  • Choose stump removal if… you need the entire root system gone for construction projects, landscaping plans, or to prevent any chance of regrowth.

Cost Considerations

The cost to remove a tree stump varies depending on the size of the stump, its location, and whether you choose grinding or removal. On average:

  • Stump grinding is usually more affordable, especially for multiple stumps.
  • Full stump removal costs more due to the additional labor and equipment but may be necessary for certain projects.

Consulting with a professional arborist can help you understand the exact cost to remove stump options for your property.

DIY Stump Removal: Is It Worth It?

Some homeowners consider DIY stump removal by using chainsaws, chemicals, or even fire. While this might seem like a money-saving option, it comes with significant risks:

  • Heavy equipment and tools can be dangerous without training.
  • Chemical stump removers can take months to work and may harm the surrounding soil.
  • Improper methods may leave behind hazardous roots or partially decayed wood.

Professional stump grinding or removal ensures the job is done safely, efficiently, and with lasting results.

Homer Tree came out and took down ten- 100+ ft tall Red Oaks lost to Oak Wilt and then took all the stumps out. They were very professional and skilled. Despite our greenhouse under the trees they did zero damage to anything with all of their large trucks and high work dropping massive logs. The price was amazing and they beat 4 other companies and even solo jobbers by thousands. I recommend them highly.
