How Mulch Decomposition Affects Your Soil and When to Re-Mulch

landscape mulchh 1

Mulch is one of the most important components of a healthy landscape. It supports soil health, conserves moisture, reduces weeds, and adds curb appeal—but over time, mulch naturally breaks down. Understanding how mulch decomposition affects your soil, and knowing when it’s time to refresh your mulch, helps protect your trees, shrubs, and planting beds year-round.

At Homer Tree Care and Homer Industries, we’re here to help you make the most of your mulch—whether you’re looking for bulk mulch delivery or need expert guidance from certified arborists on mulch maintenance tips.

What Happens as Mulch Decomposes?

Organic mulch doesn’t just sit on the surface of your soil—it slowly breaks down, feeding the earth with organic matter and nutrients. This process improves soil structure and encourages healthy root development by increasing beneficial microbial activity.

However, once mulch becomes too decomposed, it begins to lose its function. It no longer insulates roots, retains moisture, or suppresses weeds effectively. In fact, old, compacted mulch can even form a crust that repels water, keeping much-needed moisture from reaching tree and plant roots.

How Often to Mulch Trees

A common question we hear from customers at Homer Industries and clients at Homer Tree Care is: How often should I reapply mulch? As a general rule, we recommend re-mulching once per year—typically in spring—before the summer heat kicks in.

That said, factors like mulch type, weather exposure, and tree species may affect your timeline. Finely shredded mulches break down faster and may need refreshing more frequently. On the other hand, coarser mulches like bark nuggets or wood chips often last longer.

The best way to know if it’s time to re-mulch? Check your mulch depth. If it has worn down to less than 2 inches or is visibly breaking down into soil, it’s time to add more.

Benefits of Re-Mulching

Re-mulching isn’t just about giving your landscape a polished look—it plays a key role in plant health. Here are some of the top benefits of re-mulching:

  • Better Soil Health: As mulch breaks down, it enhances soil quality, but compacted, decomposed mulch can limit airflow and water infiltration. Fresh mulch revives these benefits.
  • Moisture Control: Re-mulching helps the soil retain moisture during hot or dry conditions, reducing the need for frequent watering.
  • Weed Prevention: A consistent mulch layer blocks light from reaching weed seeds, minimizing growth.
  • Erosion Protection: Mulch protects bare soil from erosion during storms or heavy rainfall.
  • Root Protection: Proper mulch application helps insulate roots from extreme temperature swings.

Mulch Maintenance Tips from the Pros

At Homer Tree Care and Homer Industries, we always recommend following these mulch maintenance best practices:

  • Avoid the “volcano” effect. Keep mulch a few inches away from the base of trees and shrubs to avoid rot and pest problems.
  • Stick to the proper depth. Apply mulch in a 2–4 inch layer to maximize its effectiveness without suffocating roots.
  • Rake and refresh. If your mulch has compacted or formed a crust, gently fluff it to restore structure and allow air and water to pass through.
  • Choose the right mulch for the job. At Homer Industries, we offer a range of high-quality natural and colored mulches—available for pickup or bulk delivery—to suit every landscape need.

Homer Tree came out and took down ten- 100+ ft tall Red Oaks lost to Oak Wilt and then took all the stumps out. They were very professional and skilled. Despite our greenhouse under the trees they did zero damage to anything with all of their large trucks and high work dropping massive logs. The price was amazing and they beat 4 other companies and even solo jobbers by thousands. I recommend them highly.
